Outstanding Service Award

The Outstanding Service Award is made to a faculty member in the College of Engineering in recognition of excellence in service to the College of Engineering and/or its units.

The award consists of a memento and an honorarium. The award will be given annually (if appropriate).

Criteria

The basis for selection will be excellence in service to the College of Engineering and/or its units. Outstanding service can come in a variety of forms. It may be related to a specific contribution or to a cumulative effort. The service must be at a level significantly above and beyond the baseline expectation and have an impact that would not exist otherwise. Nominators are encouraged to nominate all deserving candidates.

Eligibility

This award is open to any faculty member in the College of Engineering, including regular, research, teaching, and special faculty, who has been a faculty member in the College of Engineering for at least 10 years, not necessarily continuously.

Nomination requirements

Nominations for the award will be submitted to the College of Engineering Award and Recognition Committee for Faculty by the deadline. The nominator must be a College of Engineering Department Head (or equivalent) or Associate Dean. Successful nomination packages must clearly describe impact in service. Documentation to support the nomination should include:

  • a citation of no more than 100 words
  • a nomination letter of no more than two pages, including justification of the nomination
  • a current curriculum vitae for the nominee
  • letters of reference (at least five and no more than ten) from current or former Carnegie Mellon students, staff, and faculty that detail how the nominee's service contributed to the nominee’s department and/or the College of Engineering
  • any other optional materials the nominators may consider appropriate, recommended to be not more than ten pages

Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the College of Engineering Awards and Recognition Committee for Faculty. All awards will be presented at the Annual College of Engineering Faculty Meeting.
