Wearable Computer Projects: Wearable Computers and Their Applications Asim Smailagic and Dan Siewiorek, Human Computer Interaction Institute This project builds on our newest wearable computers, develops new applications, and includes user tests. Wearable computers deal in information rather than programs, becoming tools in the user's environment when used as powerful portable info-stations. The wearable computer provides portable access to information. When combined with pervasive computing, wearable computers can provide access to the right information at the right place and at the right time. The sensor module can be designed to enhance context awareness. Sensors may include a digital compass for determining the direction the user is facing, tilt sensors to determine the users orientation, as well as bio metric and other sensors that can be used to determine the user's context. The application domain includes: augmented reality, context aware collaboration, augmented manufacturing and maintenance, wearable assisted living, personal wellness coach, diabetes management assistant, etc. For example, augmented reality enhances the user's view of real world objects by overlying virtual objects (textual and graphical) on that view, providing information and guidance on how to perform certain tasks, such as manufacturing, maintenance, construction, and navigation (like aircraft, ship, car, etc.). Another example, our Diabetes Management Assistant (DiMA) is a wearable computer system with wireless communication and a set of accessories, designed to help diabetic patients and their doctors to better manage the disease. DiMA also includes a glucose meter, a digital camera, a pedometer, and software applications to complete a package that is convenient and easy-to-use. |
