Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Heat- Mass Transfer Project

From the American Cancer Society (ACS):

“Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body, is linked to at least 10 different cancers, and accounts for some 30% of all cancer deaths. And it costs billions of dollars each year. Yet one in four Americans still light up.”

From the American Lung Association (ALA):

“Smoking-related diseases claim an estimated 430,700 American lives each year. Smoking costs the United States approximately $97.2 billion each year in health-care costs and lost productivity. It is directly responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer cases and causes most cases of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.”

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT):

NRT uses various methods of nicotine delivery, typically reducing levels of delivery over time, to help smokers to quit smoking. NRT are supported by the ACS and the ALA as aids in stopping smoking.

According to a New York Times article published in May of 2004, so many people are buying the therapies that GlaxoSmithKline alone reported NRT profits of nearly $606 million in 2002.

Abstracts for numerous studies and reviews of NRT efficacy can be found by clicking here.
