Studies Examining Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Heat- Mass Transfer Project

Below are seven studies from the past few years which have examined Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in helping smokers to stop smoking. Also, an article from the New York Times sheds light on the financial aspects of NRT.

Study 1

Study 1 found a higher relapse rate of patients who followed NRT versus patients who received the placebo, suggesting that treatments should continue beyond 6 months.

Increased risk of relapse after stopping nicotine replacement therapies: a mathematical modelling approach. By Medioni J, Berlin I, Mallet A.

Study 2

Study 2 also found a higher relapse rate of patients who followed NRT under 1 year, similarly suggesting that treatments should continue for long times and be repeated.

Tobacco Control. 2006 Aug;15(4):280-5.
Nicotine replacement therapy for long-term smoking cessation: a meta-analysis. By Etter JF, Stapleton JA.

Study 3

Study 3 states that the use of pharmaceuticals including NRT doubles the success of stopping smoking.

Study 4

Study 4 suggests that NRT itself does not increase the chances of stopping smoking. However, a combination of NRT and counseling helps significantly.

Study 5

Study 5 found that it was more effective and cost effective to stop smoking with telephone counseling than NRT.

Study 6

Study 6 suggests that a combination of NRT, counseling and other pharmaceuticals will help in stopping smoking, but these therapies work better for women than men.

Study 7

Study 7 found that younger smokers in a socioeconomically deprived areas received little benefit with NRT, mainly because of culture and commitment.
