Thank Goodness It's Friday!
Stephanie, Civil & Environmental Engineering Junior
It's Friday morning, and I am already getting excited for the weekend! But before I can relax with my friends, I still have to go to my classes today. As a junior, my weekly schedule is pretty regular, which is nice. I always have breakfast, even if it means I’ll be late for class, so I'd better get going!
I'm taking only engineering classes this semester, which is a pretty hard feat! I'm taking two required classes, two labs, and a technical seminar. The seminar covers special topics, such as structural design and transportation engineering, which really interested me. Last semester in my junior project course, I did a project on transportation. It was a really great experience and hopefully it will help land me a great internship this summer.
I work in the College of Engineering Dean's Office as an Office Assistant. Mainly I file, make copies, and make deliveries around campus. Making deliveries when it's freezing cold outside, like today, is my least favorite thing to do!
I'm from Hawaii, so it took quite a while to transition to Pittsburgh weather! I knew I was getting into something very different by coming to Carnegie Mellon, and that was actually part of what attracted me to CIT. Growing up in Hawaii, my family rarely visited the mainland. Then my older sister went to school in Boston. She gave me lots of pointers when it was my turn to go to college. "Layer! Just Layer!" Haha! It was exciting to buy coats and gloves for winter weather for the first time in my life. When I first saw snow on the ground, I was totally amazed! The night before, everything looked completely normal, and the next morning I woke up and everything was white. It's so different from home, but I really love it!
The University Center is on my way home from work, so I always stop and work out in the gym. When I';m done, I usually call one of my roommates, and we walk back to our apartment in Cathedral Mansions. Cathedral Mansions (or CatMan, as we like to call it) is a university-owned apartment building that is only a couple blocks away from campus. I like living in CatMan because I love all the space and it is really convenient to have a kitchen. My roommates, Aimee and Abby, are friends that I made freshman year, so it’s really nice that we were able to stick together! A lot of our other friends live in Cathedral Mansions, too. Next year we’re moving to another Carnegie Mellon apartment in a building that is a little farther away, but it has a dishwasher!
When I get home from working out, I shower and do some homework. I usually don’t like to do homework on Fridays or the weekends, but sometimes I have a lot of assignments due and it becomes necessary! Right now I'm pretty caught up with my work, so I might just spend a couple hours tomorrow looking over my homework and maybe starting a couple assignments.
When my friends and I have enough money, we love to go out to restaurants. Our favorites are Bangkok Balcony or Aladdin's in Squirrel Hill. When we're feeling really rich, we go shopping at the Waterfront or one of the other shopping districts around Pittsburgh like the Robinson Town Center or the Southside Works. We love H&M and Urban Outfitters!
After dinner and shopping, Aimee, Abby, and I usually go back and chill in our apartment. A lot of times, our friends come over to watch movies and have a sleep over even though we all live in the same building! At the end of the weekend, we all go out for brunch at Pamela’s in Shadyside for "story time." It's just a chance to catch up and exchange stories and gossip from our week. And maybe do some more shopping!
