Answers to questions about giving

Thoughts About giving

Thank you for considering a donation to the college. We've listed answers to the questions we are most frequently asked by donors. If you don't see the answer that you need, please email us—we're happy to help.

question

What are unrestricted gifts? Why are they important?

answer

Unrestricted gifts provide the administration, deans, and department heads immediate, flexible funds for new initiatives, scholarship programs, or other academic priorities that are not included in current operating budgets.

question

How does my annual gift through the Annual Fund make an impact and where does my money go?

answer

Your gift goes directly where you want it to go! You can designate your gift to the department, college, center, or college-wide academic program of your choice. Your annual gift and gifts from other College of Engineering donors combine to provide vital support for CIT's talented students

question

What is a matching gifts program, and how do I use it?

answer

As a demonstration of commitment to employees and partnership with the community, numerous companies will match an employee's (and/or spouse's) gift to a charitable organization. To find out how to maximize the impact of your gift, contact your (or your spouse's) human resources department.

question How will my gift be recognized?
answer Annual gifts of $1,000 or more are recognized university-wide through membership in the Andrew Carnegie Society. Members receive AcCeSs programs and events.

question What tax benefits do I receive for my gift?
answer

Your gift may provide you with federal and state income tax benefits:

  • If you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return, you may be able to deduct your contribution from your adjusted gross income. In addition, gifts of appreciated property avoid long term capital gains tax. Check with your tax advisor for deduction and capital gains tax requirements and limitations for your situation.

From Phillip Dowd

"If you want to get involved in something on the side, apart from your career and your family, a university is perfect. Everywhere you look there are people doing interesting things."

"I support graduate students....You get involved in a project, like a fellowship at CIT, and you see that it produces value and ideas, which give rise to new products and industries."

"At some non-profits, you can’t get close to the professionals, much less the way they operate. One of the nice things about Carnegie Mellon is that I can wander around and talk to the people."

"Trying to make a difference—that’s the accomplishment. It’s also nice having someone say 'Thank you, you really did a nice job.' That’s what really drives me forward."
