Carnegie Mellon Materials Science and Engineering Department Hosts National Workshop For Area High School Science Teachers

PITTSBURGH—Carnegie Mellon University's Materials Science and Engineering Department is hosting an ASM International High School Teachers' Camp, June 22-26, which will help 28 science teachers from the Pittsburgh area develop a materials science and technology course.
               

"The program is designed to give secondary high school science teachers hands-on experience in incorporating materials science into their classrooms," said Anthony D. Rollett, a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon.
                 

During the one-week workshop in the undergraduate laboratories teachers will learn the basics of materials science technology as taught on the high school level. They will work with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, and develop a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials to everyday life.
                 

Rollett said the program is an excellent tool to bring together academic and vocational instructors in a common goal of exciting students about science, technology and engineering.
                 

Some of the schools participating in the novel program include: the Pittsburgh Public Schools; the Penn Hills School District; Shady Side Academy; The Ellis School; Winchester Thurston School; Woodland Hills High School; Oakland Catholic High School; Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School; and West Mifflin Area High School.
                 

Financial support for the program comes from several public and private sponsors, including the ASM Materials Education Foundation and the local Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Chapter of ASM International.
