Funding Sources
"The experience of meeting real people with real stories and seeing real actions with real consequences is simply invaluable." --Akshay Sameer Dave

There are a number of funding resources both from within and outside of the university for study and travel abroad. Links to more information on these opportunities are below.

CIT Travel Grant Program

Students and alumni frequently report that their experiences abroad are the most enriching experiences of their lives. While living abroad will be the true barometer of what you will experience and learn, your learning will be richer if you think broadly before you go about the intellectual, cultural and social impact that study abroad may have on you academically, personally and professionally.

CIT funds can be used for a variety of educational purposes including tuition and fees, course related expenses such as required fees, books, supplies, and equipment, and other expenses related to the overseas experience.

To make study and travel abroad possible for our students, the CIT Dean's Office provides travel stipends in a number of ways:

  • We offer travel grants that students can apply for when studying abroad during the academic year. CIT Dean’s Office will provide up to one third of the total cost and up to $500 per request. Students receiving funding will be required to provide a one-to-two page report of their experience, provide photos, and present their experience to a CIT audience.

Scholarship applications are due on the following schedule:

    • November 14th for Spring travel

    • April 15th for Fall travel

Please contact the CIT Undergraduate Studies Office for more details.

  • In addition, we contribute to a similar program for student groups to go abroad. Whether it's part of Habitat for Humanity, Engineers Without Borders, or an educational experience overseas, this program provides funding to make these opportunities more affordable. Funds may cover up to one-third of the total expenses up to a maximum of $2000. Students receiving funding will be required to provide a one-to-two page report of their experience, provide photos, and present their experience to a CIT audience. Students participating in student group trips abroad are required to follow the Short Term Organized International Travel (STO-IT) Guidelines. Please contact the CIT Undergraduate Studies Office for more details.

Applications will be accepted through the CIT Dean's Office and/or Tartans Abroad. Scholarship applications are due on the following schedule:

    • November 14th Winter Break, Spring Break

    • February 13th Spring Break, Summer

    • April 15th Summer

  • CIT also provides substantial funds to CIT students who wish to participate in short-term experiences abroad. Funding cannot be used for semesterly or yearly study abroad programs. Funds may cover up to one-third of the total expenses up to a maximum of $2000. Scholarships will not be available for students in their final semester of study at the university. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to sharing their overseas experience with the broader Carnegie Mellon community in a meaningful and educative manner. Applications should include specifics on such proposed outreach. The final presentation format will be arranged in consultation with a study abroad advisor.

Awards are based on the following criteria:

    • Quality of abroad project and complete nature of proposal

    • Commitment to sharing experience with the university community upon return

    • Diversity of college, major and region of abroad experience among scholarship recipients

    • Intention to make meaningful connections to the host country

    • Strength of the recommendation letter

Applications will be accepted through the CIT Dean's Office and/or Tartans Abroad. Scholarship applications are due on the following schedule:
