Step 2: Placement Tests

ALL THE LINKS YOU NEED

Math Placement Tests - Required

The Math Placement Test begins June 6. It must be completed by August 1, 2008.

All first-year engineering students are REQUIRED to take an on-line math placement test. You cannot register without completing this test.

Your test score, in conjunction with your math AP, IB, A level scores, or transfer courses, will determine the best calculus course for your first semester. It is important that you take the test seriously. This test indicates how you will do in a calculus course at Carnegie Mellon.

To take this online placement exam you must first complete Step One, so that you can take the test via our Blackboard system. Once you have your Andrew ID and password, read the Calculus Placement Instructions to learn how to take the test.

Once you start the math placement test you must complete it in one sitting, you cannot take it over a few days. It could take several hours to complete.

If you have additional questions about the calculus placement test or are experiencing difficulties, please contact Adriane Schneider.

English Placement Test - International Students Only

The English Placement Test begins June 10. It must be completed by August 1, 2008.

REQUIRED to take the online English Placement test. If you are not sure if the test is required for you, log on to your Blackboard account; if it is required, there will be a test link when you sign in. The results of this placement are used to identify which first-year English course is required for you.

All students must complete the placement process within a 24-hour time period.  It is expected to take approximately 5-6 HOURS, so please plan accordingly. See the requirements for the test.

The test is comprised of three steps that you must complete to be registered for First-Year English at Carnegie Mellon:

STEP 1:  Quiz that asks you to pledge your compliance with the instructions and conditions of the process.

STEP 2: Self-assessment that asks questions about your history with reading and writing in both English and your first language or mother tongue, along with questions that ask you to assess yourself as a reader and writer.

STEP 3:  Placement essay that you will write in response to two readings that will be provided to you. You will compose your essay electronically.
