Choosing your major at the end of the first year

All the Links you need

Students will declare a major near the end of their first year. Throughout the first year, we offer opportunities to learn more about the different engineering majors available at CIT. The list below is a good place to start.

Information Sessions:  At orientation, information sessions are offered to allow you a chance to meet faculty and upper-class students from each of the seven CIT departments.

Major Receptions: These events are held throughout the fall semester to allow you to mix, mingle, and ask individual questions to specific engineering faculty and upper-class students. You can check the CIT calendar for dates and times.

First Year Dinner Club: This is a chance to eat dinner with upperclass students and faculty to ask questions and discuss majors.

Introductory Engineering Electives: You will be taking two introductory engineering electives of your choice in your first year. While these courses will develop your analytical skills, they will also introduce you to engineering principles and a specific field of engineering.

Career Center:  CIT career representatives are available in the Career Center (basement of the University Center) to meet with students and talk about the career opportunities for each of the fields. You can also take personality/inventory tests, that evaluate your strengths and interests and then can utilize these findings to see how those match up to career possibilities.

Department Faculty: You can also visit the various departments on campus and speak with a few professors to get more information about a particular major. You can check the department websites too.

CIT Undergraduate Studies Office:  We also welcome students to meet with us to answer any questions you may have. If we don’t have the answer, we usually know who you should speak with to get the answer.

Note: If you were interested in joining the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department, but your admission letter says you are restricted, there is still a chance you could major in ECE. Please see the FY FAQ, under Declaring Majors & Minors.
