All incoming First-Year students are required to take an on-line Calculus Placement exam. Your fall calculus course option will be based on your score on the Carnegie Mellon math placement exam in conjunction with any AP, IB, Cambridge A-level or college math scores.
Calculus Course Options
The standard calculus course for the fall is 21-120, Differential and Integral Calculus. But your placement into the appropriate calculus course is based on your score on the online math placement exam in conjunction with your AP, IB or Cambridge A-level exam scores or previous college credit. So it is possible to start at any of the courses below.
21-120 Differential and Integral Calculus, 10 units
21-121 Integration and Differential Equations, 10 units
21-122 Integration, Differential Equations, and Approximation, 10 units
21-123 Calculus of Approximation (mini-course), 5 units
21-259 Calculus in Three Dimensions, 9 units
21-260 Differential Equations, 9 units
The descriptions of these courses are available on the Schedule of Classes website
Calculus AP Credit
The AP credit and placement into a calculus course is conditional in that you must successfully complete the calculus course for which you register yourself to earn the credit for the course(s) you placed out of. If a course is too advanced for your background, you will have an opportunity to switch to a less advanced course without penalty.
Calcus Course Levels
In the fall term, several levels of calculus courses are available:
21-120, Differential and Integral Calculus |
For students who had little or no calculus preparation in high school |
21-121, Integration and Differential Equations |
For students with some calculus preparation but are not ready for 21-122 |
21-122, Integration, Differential Equations, and Approximation |
Students who have a more advanced background in calculus |
21-123, Calculus of Approximation |
Students who have advanced experience in calculus (including integration and some differential equations |
21-259, Calculus in Three Dimensions or
21-260, Differential Equations |
Students who have college-level experience (based on placement test results and AP). |
Reminder: If you place out of 21-120, any appropriate advanced placement credit is conditional upon you successfully completing the higher level course into which you were placed. If you do not pass the course, you will forfeit the credit and should register for a lower level calculus course to ensure forward progress.
Calculus Course Sequence
The calculus courses also follow a specific sequence:
If you start with: 21-120: Differential and Integral Calculus
Then next you take: 21-122: Integration, Differential Equations & Approximation
-OR-
If you start with: 21-121: Integration and Differential
Then next you take: 21-123: Calculus for Approximation (mini course)
After the appropriate above sequence is finished you may opt to enroll in 21-259 (Calculus in Three Dimensions), 21-260 (Differential Equations) or ECE majors 21-127 (Concepts of Math).
The descriptions of all these courses are available online at Schedule of Classes.
