The following awards are given to faculty in recognition of their academic and research achievements. Each award has different criteria and requirements. Please read the instructions carefully before preparing a nomination. (To see a list of current and past award winners, click here.)
Distinguished Professor of Engineering Award
The Distinguished Professor of Engineering Award is made to a faculty member within the Carnegie Institute of Technology in recognition of exceptional achievements that have enhanced the reputation of CIT. The award consists of a gold medal and an honorarium. This award is to be given no more frequently than once every two years, when appropriate.
Eligibility
The award is open to any faculty member in CIT, including regular, research, and special faculty, without regard to age or academic rank.
Criteria
The basis for selection will be the degree to which the nominee has all of the following:
-
extraordinary research contributions
-
innovative and lasting contributions to education
-
sustained excellence in teaching
-
leadership in local, national or global initiatives related to engineering and the impacts of technology on Society
-
leadership in college or university initiatives that have had significant impact on engineering education and research at Carnegie Mellon
Procedures
Nominations for the award can be submitted by all members of the CIT community to the CIT Associate Dean for Faculty and Graduate Affairs by the last day of classes of the fall semester. Documentation to support the nomination should include:
-
a citation of approximately 100 words
-
a one page justification of the nomination
-
a current copy of the nominee's resume
-
letters from Carnegie Mellon and external sources who can attest to the nominees achievements and document their impacts
-
any other optional materials the nominators may consider appropriate
Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the CIT Faculty Awards Committee by the end of the Fall semester. All CIT Faculty awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Faculty Awards Banquet.

Phillip L Dowd Fellowship
The Dowd Fellowship is awarded to a faculty member in engineering to recognize educational contributions and to encourage the undertaking of an educational project such as textbook writing, educational technology development, laboratory experience improvement, educational software, or course and curriculum development.
The Dowd Fellowship Award will usually consist of a suitable plaque and the award of a discretionary fund to support the nominee's education project. This fund can be used for salary support (subject to the normal CIT and Carnegie Mellon rules for summer salary support), editing, travel, reproduction fees, graphic services, etc. The appointment and the right to hold the Dowd Fellow title is for one calendar year and may be awarded to a previous holder after a one year lapse.
Eligibility
Any faculty member is eligible on the nomination of his or her department head. Department heads are encouraged to nominate senior faculty in the year of or immediately following their Senior Faculty Review. In addition, former Dowd Fellowship holders may submit faculty nominations.
Criteria
The basis for selection will be excellence in education as measured by:
-
teaching accomplishment and innovation
-
educational contributions and
-
merit of the proposed educational project.
Procedures
Nominations for the award will be submitted by CIT department heads or former Dowd Fellows to the CIT Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs by the last day of classes of the fall semester. Documentation will consist of a letter nomination of no more than two pages and a current curriculum vitae for the nominee. A senior faculty review package may also be submitted. Only one nomination may be made by each department head in each year.
Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the CIT Faculty Awards Committee. All CIT Faculty awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Faculty Awards Banquet.

Steven J. Fenves Award for Systems Research
The Steven J. Fenves Award for Systems Research will be presented to one or more individuals within CMU every year who have made a significant contribution to Systems research in areas relevant to ICES. The award will consist of a plaque and a gold medal or $1500. This will be given individually to all awardees in the event that there is more than one award in any year. The award is to be presented annually (if appropriate), but no less than once every two years.
Eligibility
All teaching and research faculty, and research staff who have at least a courtesy appointment in CIT and who are involved in a CIT related research agenda. For purposes of this award, a nominee will be considered to have a courtesy appointment in CIT if he/she has a courtesy appointment in the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES) or in any one of the academic departments within CIT (Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering and Public Policy, Material Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering).
Criteria
The basis for selection will be the degree to which the nominee has made significant contribution to systems research in areas relevant to ICES, as evidenced by one or more of the following:
-
furthering the goal of interconnecting people, physical, and information
-
development and demonstration of an engineered system,
-
enhancing education in systems through the development of courses, publishing textbooks (paper or electronic), or a body of knowledge that is of pedagogical importance, and
-
causing a paradigm shift in systems research.
Procedures
Any Carnegie Mellon faculty member may nominate qualified individuals for this award. Nominations for the award can be submitted to the Director of ICES at the beginning of the fall semester of each year. The deadline for nominations will be usually in the last week of November, but a specific date will be announced each fall. Documentation to support the nomination should include:
-
A citation of less than 100 words,
-
One page justification of the nomination,
-
Current copy of the nominee's resume,
-
Letters of reference from at least 2 but no more than 5 people
-
Other optional material that the nominator may consider appropriate
This is a CIT award that is administered through ICES. The selection committee will consist of the following individuals: Dean of Engineering, Director of ICES, and at least 2 other senior faculty members identified by the Dean and ICES Director and appointed annually. All CIT awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Awards Banquet.

George Tallman Ladd Research Award
The G.T. Ladd award is made to a faculty member within the Carnegie Institute of Technology in recognition of outstanding research and professional accomplishments and potential. The award is in the form of a memento and an honorarium. More than one award may be made in each year.
Eligibility
The award is restricted to Assistant Professors and Research Engineers in CIT in the year of reappointment or the year after.
Criteria
The basis for selection will be excellence in research as measured by:
-
scholarly publications,
-
research program development,
-
development of funding, and
-
awards and other recognition.
Procedures
Nominations for the award will be submitted by CIT department heads to the CIT Associate Dean for Faculty and Graduate Affairs by the last day of classes of the fall semester. The documentation to support the case should be that used for re-appointment as an Assistant Professor or Research Engineer. A nomination letter by the department head should accompany the re-appointment materials, along with a citation of approximately 70 words. No letters other than the nomination letter should be submitted. The nomination materials may be updated for nominees one year after re-appointment.
Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the CIT Faculty Awards Committee. All CIT Faculty awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Faculty Awards Banquet.

Outstanding Research Award
The Outstanding Research Award is made to a faculty member within the Carnegie Institute of Technology in recognition of an exceptional research contribution that has enhanced the reputation of CIT in a global or national context. This award is for a research accomplishment that has occurred during the candidates' time in CIT and has received significant praise from experts in the field. This award is designed to recognize a singular research accomplishment and is not meant to recognize an accumulated record of accomplishments. The award consists of a certificate and an honorarium. The award will be given annually (if appropriate).
Eligibility
The award is open to any faculty member, or team of faculty members, in CIT, including regular, research and special faculty, without regard to age or academic rank.
Criteria
The basis for selection will be the degree to which the nominee has achieved an exceptional research contribution as evidenced by publications, patents, citations, or other criteria deemed important by experts in the field.
Procedures
Nominations for the award can be submitted by all members of the CIT community to the CIT Associate Dean for Academic Affairs by the last day of classes of the fall semester. Documentation to support the nomination should include:
-
a citation of approximately 100 words,
-
a one page justification of the nomination,
-
a current copy of the nominee's resume,
-
letters from Carnegie Mellon and external sources who can attest to the singular research accomplishment of the nominee(s) and document the impacts of the accomplishment, and
-
any other optional materials the nominators may consider appropriate.
Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the CIT Faculty Awards Committee by the end of the Fall semester. All CIT Faculty awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Faculty Awards Banquet.

Benjamin Richard Teare Teaching Award
The B.R. Teare Teaching Award is made to a faculty member within the Carnegie Institute of Technology in recognition of excellence in engineering education. The award consists of a memento and an honorarium. More than one award may be made in any year.
Eligibility
The award is open to any faculty member in CIT, including regular, research, lecturer and special faculty, without regard to age or academic rank.
Criteria
The basis for selection will be excellence in engineering education in the areas of teaching and/or educational innovation and educational leadership. The award may be made on the basis of outstanding teaching performance alone, or some combination of teaching, educational innovation and educational leadership. Examples of contributions which are expected of Teare Award recipients are:
-
writing scholarly texts, especially for classroom use,
-
developing new laboratories,
-
developing new courses,
-
developing new educational programs,
-
outstanding classroom teaching,
-
leadership in project course activities,
-
outstanding laboratory instruction, or
-
developing or using educational software.
Procedures
Nominations for the award will be submitted by CIT department heads to the CIT Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs by the last day of classes of the fall semester. Documentation to support the nomination should include:
-
a citation of approximately 100 words,
-
a one page justification of the nomination,
-
a current copy of the nominee's resume,
-
a full set of FCE scores for the nominee,
-
letters of reference from two members of the Carneie Mellon faculty,
-
letters of reference from three current or former students of the nominee, and
-
any other optional materials the nominating department may consider appropriate.
Selection of the award winner or winners is performed by the CIT Faculty Awards Committee by the end of the Fall semester. All CIT Faculty awards will be announced at the Annual CIT Faculty Awards Banquet.
