An Accelerated Masters Program

The Engineering and Technology Innovation Management MS program builds upon the technical strengths of engineers and scientists by providing frameworks to lead, foster and manage technical innovation. This unique, cross-cutting approach allows students to develop capabilities for leading innovation while growing and leveraging their own areas of technical expertise.

E&TIM is a one-year interdisciplinary MS program offered by Carnegie Mellon's distinguished College of Engineering, one of the top ten engineering schools in the country. It is coordinated by the Department of Engineering and Public Policy with collaboration from other schools, including the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management , the Department of Social & Decision Sciences (in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences) and the Tepper School of Business.

The one-year program runs from January to December and includes a summer internship. Applications are currently being accepted for January 2010.

Interdisciplinary Approach

E&TIM builds on a convergence of Carnegie Mellon strengths, including strong traditional engineering programs; successful educational collaborations across disciplines; the Strategy, Entrepreneurship & Technological Change (SETChange) PhD and research program, the Department of Engineering and Public Policy, excellent product and process innovation project courses, and broad offerings in entrepreneurship education.

The core of the E&TIM program emphasizes the fundamentals of innovation management in theory and practice. Electives, chosen in conjunction with a faculty advisor, enable students to focus the program to their technical interests and to specific topics in technology innovation management processes, policies or organizations. In addition, a required summer internship project will provide hands-on real world experience in E&TIM.

E&TIM works with business and industry to benefit both our students and the professional community. Industry partners collaborate with E&TIM to frame relevant areas of study for students. Companies participate in our summer internship program and Innovation Management in Practice seminar series. Each student completes a Product or Process Innovation Project course that involves a real-world client. E&TIM actively seeks out companies who will serve as clients and contribute concepts, ideas or issues that would benefit from student engagement.

Overall, E&TIM equips students to drive value creation from technical innovation based on their understanding of technical concepts, innovation management fundamentals and real world implications.
