Application form
Applicants can apply for the E&TIM program using the online application or by mailing the printable E&TIM application form to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

*Dual Degree applicatants: Dual degree applicants must apply to both the E&TIM program and the traditional college of Engineering program to which they are interested. More information here.

 

Application fee
The application fee to the E&TIM program is $65. Application fees can be paid by credit card using the E&TIM online application. Alternatively, application fees can be mailed to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below by check (made payable to Carnegie Mellon University) or international bank draft. Application fees are not able to be received by way of bank wire.

 

Official transcript(s) from all previously attended universities
Applicants must submit official transcripts from both undergraduate institutions and any previous graduate work. For a transcript to be official, it must be sent to the E&TIM admissions office by the university where the studies were completed. If you are currently enrolled in a degree program that you have not completed at the time you submit your application, please submit your current transcript. An additional (final) transcript must be submitted upon completion of your work.

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your transcript to the admissions office. An unofficial transcript can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy through the additional documentation submission option on the online application, by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

 

GRE score report
Applicants for the E&TIM program must take the GRE general test (Graduate Record Examination test administered by ETS), and must request an official GRE score report to be mailed to the E&TIM graduate admissions office. For a score report to be official, it must be sent the E&TIM graduate admissions office by ETS. The GRE codes for E&TIM are -- 1699 (department) and 2074 (institution).

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your GRE scores to the admissions office. An unofficial score report can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy through the additional documentation submission option on the E&TIM page of the online application, by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

 

TOEFL or IELTS score reports
If you are an international applicant and the native language of your country of citizenship is not English, you must take the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language administered by ETS), and must request an official TOEFL score report to be mailed to the E&TIM graduate admissions office. For a score report to be official, it must be sent the E&TIM graduate admissions office by ETS. The TOEFL code for E&TIM is 69 (department) and 2074 (institution). When prompted to choose a department, please choose “Graduate,” not “Graduate Management.”

 

Though each application is judged as a package, rather than on individual critera, the recommended minimum for the TOEFL score for the E&TIM program is:

Paper-based Test (PBT): 600

Computer-based Test (CBT): 250

Internet-based Test (iBT): 82 (with no sub-score less than: Reading= 21, Listening= 21, Speaking= 17, and Writing= 20)

 

Though the TOEFL test is preferred, the E&TIM program will also accept the submission of official IELTS scores (International English Language Testing System).

 

The recommended minimum score for the IELTS score is an over-all band of 7 with no sub-score lower than 6 (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).

Financial Letter of Support

If you are an international applicant, you may also include a letter of financial support in your application package. If admitted, you will be required to submit an official document Carnegie Mellon's Office of International Education as proof of funding in order to obtain immigration paperwork.

 

Resume
Applicants to the E&TIM program must submit an updated resume describing the applicant’s educational and professional background.

Resumes can be submitted in several ways: by uploading
an electronic copy to the resume submission option on
the E&TIM page on the online application, by email
(etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

 

Statement of purpose
The Statement of Purpose is a one to two page typed statement that answers the following questions:

  • What are your reasons for undertaking graduate study at Carnegie Mellon University?

  • How do your experience, your education and graduate training in E&TIM, and your future career plans relate to each other?

The Statement of Purpose can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy to the Statement of Purpose submission option on the E&TIM page on the online application, by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

 

Letters of recommendation (3)
Three letters of recommendation are required to be submitted by applicants to the E&TIM program. Letters are typically written by professors or work supervisors. At least one letter should be from a professor at the educational institution last attended.
For a letter of recommendation to be considered by the E&TIM graduate admissions committee, the recommender must complete a recommendation letter form.
Letters of recommendation and recommendation letter forms can be submitted in two ways: by email through the E&TIM online application (to choose this method, an applicant must apply to the E&TIM program with the online application), or by mail, sent to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below. The E&TIM graduate admissions office will accept mailed letters of recommendation sent either by the applicant or directly from the recommender, but in either case the respondent must sign the letter envelope over the sealed flap.

 

Additional documentation (optional)
Applicants may supply the admissions committee with any additional information relevant to his or her application.
Additional documentation can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy to the additional documentation submission option on the E&TIM page on the online application (to choose this method, an applicant must apply to the E&TIM program with the online application), by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed below.

Please put your first and last name in the subject line of the email to make sure the documents are clearly associated with your application.

E&TIM Program and application Schedule

The E&TIM program runs from January to December of the same calendar year. This unusual academic calendar accommodates a mid-program summer internship.

Applications received by August 31 will be reviewed for September notification; applications received by September 30 will receive October notification.
