Four Key Elements of the E&TIM program

There are four elements of the one-year Engineering and Technology Innovation Management MS Program: core courses, technical electives, innovation management electives and a summer internship project.

1. Required Core Courses

a. Managerial and Engineering Economics
b. The Strategy and Management of Technological Innovation
c. Product/Process Innovation Requirement (e.g. Decision Tools for Engineering Design & Entrepreneurship)
d. Innovation Management in Practice Seminars

2. Electives in Engineering and Technology
Carnegie Mellon courses chosen according to a student's area of technical interest.

3. Electives in Innovation Management
Innovation management electives address: Industrial R&D and Entrepreneurship; International Business and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy; and Innovating in the Context of an Organization.

Since elective choices are determined by the interests of the student, there is a range of courses that potentially can be approved as electives for an E&TIM student's course of study. Visit the following link for a list of possible innovation management electives.

4. Summer Internship Project

The E&TIM internship experience is positioned between the first and second semesters of study in the E&TIM program. This enables students to both prepare for and learn from this real world experience.

One-Year, Full-Time Program Structure

The basic structure for E&TIM includes four courses plus a seminar each semester, as well as the integral summer internship:

Academic Block 1 (Spring Term):

  • Managerial and Engineering Economics

  • The Strategy and Management of Technological Innovation

  • One innovation management elective

  • One graduate engineering elective

  • Innovation Management in Practice Seminar

  • A product or process innovation project course (e.g. Decision Tools for Engineering Design & Entrepreneurship)

Summer Internship Project

  • Hands-on experience at an organization leveraging technology

Academic Block 2 (Fall Term):

  • Innovation Management in Practice Seminar

  • One or two innovation management electives

  • One or two technical electives

The tailoring of the program to individual student interests occurs through the choice of technical electives and innovation management electives.

Part-Time Study

A two year, part time course option is available for local students. Please contact us for more information.
